This guide is designed to give sellers a practical understanding of the topic before they make marketplace or business decisions. Requirements and platform policies can change, so current official marketplace information should always be checked for time-sensitive details.
Start with contribution margin
Revenue alone does not show whether a SKU creates value. Build a per-unit model including selling price, product cost, marketplace charges, fulfillment/shipping, returns allowance and variable advertising where applicable.
Keep fees current
Marketplace fees and program charges can change. Store the date and source used for each assumption and re-check current official fee information before financial decisions.
Product cost
Use landed cost where appropriate: supplier price plus freight, duties or other directly attributable acquisition costs relevant to your business.
Fulfillment cost
Include pick/pack, shipping, packaging, storage and fulfillment-program charges that apply to the chosen model.
Returns allowance
A product with a high return rate may be less profitable than its headline margin suggests. Model expected return/refund costs using actual SKU history when available.
Advertising economics
If advertising is used, separate organic and paid sales where possible and evaluate advertising spend against contribution, not only revenue.
Price-change sensitivity
Model how margin changes at several selling prices. This helps define a price floor and prevents automatic repricing from crossing below acceptable economics.
Cash conversion
Inventory purchases occur before many sales and payouts. Forecast supplier payment dates, inventory lead time, expected sales and payout timing.
SKU portfolio review
Group SKUs by contribution, velocity, return rate and cash usage. High-revenue products with weak margin or heavy returns deserve special attention.
Monthly finance dashboard
Track net sales, contribution margin, return/refund cost, inventory investment, aged inventory and cash required for planned replenishment.
